Modern Active Radar Missile Jets

Manage several threats without losing track of the closest one. Active missiles can complete an engagement without continuous illumination through impact, while longer shots still benefit from compatible target updates. That flexibility increases both the opportunities and the incoming threats you must account for.

Choose altitude with a defensive plan

Higher altitude can improve missile reach, but the route must still provide room to defend. Low flight introduces terrain hazards and can restrict radar view. Choose altitude according to aircraft, weapons, opposition and intended exit. Very low flight is not a guarantee against radar missiles; do not substitute it for threat assessment.

Use TWS deliberately

Maintain scan coverage around the contacts you intend to support. Broad coverage helps build the picture; narrower coverage can revisit an area sooner while leaving other space unobserved. Continue checking outside and monitoring warnings. TWS availability alone does not establish unlimited simultaneous weapon support.

Give each launch a purpose

Attack a credible intercept, force a dangerous opponent defensive or exploit someone committed elsewhere. Multiple launches should serve identifiable opportunities. Firing across the entire formation complicates tracking outcomes and can leave few weapons for the later fight.

Set a point to defend before launch

Decide how much closure and exposure you will accept while supporting the shot. Offset where practical, preserve coverage and respond when the threat demands it. Waiting for certainty can consume the time needed to maneuver. Seeker activation does not establish successful acquisition or a guaranteed intercept.

Defend against the missile bearing

Once its seeker tracks independently, defeating the launching aircraft's radar is insufficient. Establish defensive geometry against the incoming missile, use chaff appropriately and adjust as its bearing changes. Several weapons arriving from different directions may prevent one notch from addressing every threat.

Re-enter after rebuilding your options

After defending, check speed, heading, nearby enemies, teammates and remaining countermeasures. Do not turn directly back into the same attack solely because a warning stopped. Re-enter where you can make a useful shot and still respond to the next threat. Your missile may continue flying while your aircraft enters a worse position.
