Early Missile Jets

Keep flying the aircraft after acquiring the seeker lock. Early infrared missiles add an attack option, but their limitations shape the engagement. Use a suitable target aspect and flight path. Avoid maneuvering into a poor position merely to obtain a tone.

Identify the weapon before choosing the shot

Know whether acquisition requires rear aspect, how much maneuvering the weapon can manage and what launch conditions it needs. A close crossing shot can fail despite a valid lock. Rear pursuit creates a different trap: the seeker sees the engine clearly while the missile must chase an aircraft moving away.

Use distraction without losing identification

A target attacking a teammate may offer a steadier shot. Check the teammate's position and expected missile path before launching. Avoid firing into tightly mixed aircraft where identification or seeker selection is uncertain.

Keep the gun option available

If the target defeats the missile, reassess before following. Continue only if the aircraft can obtain a gun solution without sacrificing its exit. Missile failure does not justify chasing into an unfavorable turn. A missile can force a defensive maneuver without leaving a useful gun opportunity.

Defend with the equipment you carry

With flares, combine countermeasures, appropriate heat reduction and maneuver. Without them, early detection and denying an easy launch become especially important. Some early missiles can be defeated through maneuvering, but the response depends on the weapon and geometry. Check behind before settling into a predictable climb.

Adapt to the threats in the match

Do not assume every opponent carries only the same limited missiles as you. Identify likely all-aspect and radar-guided threats before choosing the approach. Your battle rating alone does not establish the guidance types you will face.

Avoid the predictable escape climb

Pulling steeply upward directly ahead of a missile-equipped pursuer can exchange separation and speed for a predictable target. Choose an escape according to closure, support and the weapon behind you. Keep enough control and energy to respond when you see the launch.
