Radar Missile Jets

Plan the engagement around the support your weapon requires. Identify radar modes, missile guidance and warning equipment before committing. Radar-equipped aircraft differ substantially in what they can detect, track and support.

Match the approach to the radar

Ordinary pulse radar can struggle with terrain behind a target. Pulse-Doppler modes improve clutter rejection while introducing geometry-dependent limitations. Choose an approach that gives your equipment a workable view; changing modes cannot recover a target hidden behind terrain.

Judge the exchange before launching

Consider speed, altitude, target aspect, closure and the exposure needed to support the missile. A distant shot may force a reaction, but can also fix your attention on one opponent while another approaches. If the target turns away, the intercept becomes more demanding; continuing straight toward it may worsen your position.

Support with tracking margin

For semi-active weapons, preserve the required illumination while offsetting where practical. Keep the contact comfortably within tracking limits. Maximum radar angle leaves little margin for target movement or a defensive correction. Decide what incoming threat will make you abandon support before firing.

Know the warning receiver limitations

Some receivers provide track and launch warnings; others lack those functions. Detection also depends on supported bands and coverage. Silence is insufficient evidence that nobody is attacking. Learn the receiver alongside the aircraft's weapons rather than treating every warning system as equivalent.

Keep the close fight in perspective

Radar and missile operation can occupy attention just as gun and infrared threats become immediate. In a close engagement, use supported acquisition modes deliberately and verify which aircraft was tracked. Do not spend the whole merge trying to rescue a radar shot when a defensive turn is already necessary.

Recover the situation after defending

Check the closest threats before turning toward the original opponent. Rebuild speed, establish a useful radar picture and choose the next engagement from the current position. Maintaining support until no time remains to defend converts a doubtful shot into a much larger loss.
